Why test web apps

  • Nothing to install or clean up afterward — just open the link
  • Works on whatever device you are already on
  • The fastest way to earn your first credits if you are new to IndieAppCircle
  • Great for spotting bugs indie devs genuinely cannot see themselves, like a broken flow in a browser they do not personally use

What to check when testing a web app

  • Try more than one browser — Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge render CSS and handle browser extensions differently. A layout bug that is invisible in Chrome can be obvious in Safari — that is exactly the kind of thing an indie dev testing alone will miss.
  • Check the mobile view — Resize your browser window down to phone width, or open it on your actual phone. A huge share of indie web-app bugs only show up below roughly 400px wide.
  • Note the first-load time — Was there a noticeable delay before anything appeared? Slow first paint is one of the most common — and most fixable — complaints indie devs get.
  • Try it with an ad blocker on — uBlock Origin and Privacy Badger silently break parts of a surprising number of small SaaS tools (blocked analytics scripts, blocked third-party embeds). Most owners have no idea until a tester tells them.

FAQ

  • Do I need to create an account to test a web app? Depends on the app — some ask for a quick sign-up, most do not. Either way, the app's page tells you before you start.
  • What if the app asks for payment info during testing? Flag it in your feedback rather than entering real payment details, unless the app's own instructions specifically say to (some subscription apps need it to test the checkout flow, but that should be stated up front).
  • How long does testing a web app usually take? The app owner sets an estimated time on their listing, typically 5 to 15 minutes for a focused first pass.
